Itinerary
Arrive into Anchorage where Salmon Berry Tours will pick you up at the airport and deliver you safely to your downtown bed & breakfast home for the week. If you arrive early enough we will have dinner reservations made for you at one of our local favorite dining spots!
After breakfast at the B&B Salmon Berry Tours will pick you up and take you on the most amazing scenic drive south of Anchorage where we will begin our snowmobile adventure. This is an Alaskan favorite adventure sport that you will never forget! Each guest over the age of 16 gets their own machine and follows a professional back country guide on an all-ability-levels, amazing ride out into the wilderness through a beautiful valley and all the way to a glacier! This will be your best view of a glacier all week – up close and personal! We’ll spend 5 hours on the machines before heading back to town to a well-deserved dinner in the city.
Today we head south again to the quaint ski-town of Girdwood. Once there we’ll take a lovely, all-ability-levels snowshoe through the beautiful meadows of Glacier Valley. You’ll be ready for a hot lunch on the top of the mountain after this! We will get there by aerial tram and have lunch with some amazing mountain-top views. We recommend the smoked-salmon chowder in a sourdough break bowl. After filling up on lunch and views, descend the tram with your Salmon Berry guide and head to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. Your guide will share animals stories with you as you observe Alaskan wildlife in a natural setting. The Center is a rescue and rehabilitation organization for injured and orphaned Alaskan wild animals. This visit is amazing, and supports a great cause! We’ll choose another great restaurant for you back in Anchorage this evening if you like. Anchorage has the most original restaurants anywhere, with the freshest creative cuisine.
Relax and sleep in because it’s going to be a late night! Enjoy Fur Rendezvous Winter Festival events downtown today (we will provide you with a schedule and point out our favorite events) like ice sculptures, pancake feed, fur auctions, carnival rides and more. Then this evening Salmon Berry Tours will pick you up and head north to the wonderful winter town of Talkeetna, Alaska. Once in Talkeetna we head to the historic Talkeetna Roadhouse where we dine on homemade soups, breads, and desserts in front of a cozy fire. The Star Lady will meet us here and share wonderful information and insight into the Northern Lights, constellations, and the Alaskan night sky. You will have an informed view as we head out late, late tonight looking for the Aurora Borealis on snowshoes. Your Salmon Berry guide will lead you out to the river where the viewing is best. This is yet another amazing Alaskan outdoor experience!
Wake up in beautiful Talkeetna today for a great homemade breakfast at the Roadhouse. Then get bundled up and we’ll head out to go dog sledding! This is the day to get first-hand experience with Alaska’s official sport. We are spending the day with a real Iditarod musher who has a lot of experience in these races and some wonderful personal stories to share about the Iditarod. He will show us gear and supplies, sleds, and share racing strategies and stories. Then you will bundle up in real Alaskan arctic mushing gear and head outside for dog sledding through the meadows. This is the real deal! Enjoy another amazing dinner back in Anchorage tonight and look forward to tomorrow’s Iditarod action.
Today is the ceremonial start of the Iditarod in downtown Anchorage. You’ll be on your own today to enjoy the festivities everywhere and watch the mass confusion of almost 1,000 dogs in downtown all at once! Be sure to stop by our office on 3rd & E to warm up with some hot chocolate and coffee!
This is the culmination of the adventure! Salmon Berry Tours will pick you up and serve homemade scones, coffee, and hot chocolate on the way to Willow where the race begins. The official start is one big party on Willow lake for the day. The Salmon Berry team will have lunch cooking for our guests to enjoy throughout the day. The menu consists of smoked salmon spread, reindeer hot dogs, veggie dogs, hearty spicy chili, and brownies! There will also be chute passes for guests to check out and go behind the scenes where mushers are preparing for their turn to begin their race. Tonight it’s back to town to relax and enjoy your B&B.
Today you will board a small aircraft and get yet another diverse view of Alaska as you fly over mountains, rivers, and glaciers headed to Rainy Pass. This will be an amazing day of watching mushers come through the checkpoint, cheering on your favorite, and having a tasty lodge lunch at Rainy Pass Lodge. Return tonight and relax for your last night in Anchorage.
Relax before flying home! Salmon Berry Tours will take you to the airport when you are ready to say goodbye. Thanks for spending a great week with Salmon Berry Tours!
