ITINERARY
Friday (Dinner Included)
Today, we will enjoy Alaska’s favorite sport – dog sledding! Salmon Berry Tours will pick you up at your Anchorage hotel and take you north to mushing country. This twilight mushing adventure is 2-1/2 hours of riding the runners, running the trails, meeting the four-legged athletes, and touring the kennels, with plenty of time for pictures with the dogs. Be sure to dress warm. The twilight dog sled training run with Dallas Seavey Racing may also require the use of headlamps which provides a unique view of mushing along the trail! Headlamps, Supplemental mushing attire and required “gear” will be provided for you. Your Salmon Berry Tours guide will provide you with transportation into Talkeetna, dinner then an evening presentation.
Tonight, we’ll go in search of the elusive Aurora Borealis! Dinner will get all of us warmed up with homemade soup, pastries and hot chocolate. From the Roadhouse, we will walk/snowshoe to the river where we will have the best view of the Northern Lights. A visit with the Star Lady is included and she will tell us all about our Alaskan sky and the Aurora Borealis phenomenon! Rooms are shared bath accommodations. If you wish for a private bathroom, request a private upgrade for $50 per person.
Saturday (Family Style Breakfast Included)
Wake up to an Alaskan-sized breakfast at the famous Talkeetna Roadhouse. Featured on both the Travel Channel and the Food Network for their casual family style dining and delicious hand-made food, the Talkeetna Roadhouse has been serving travelers and locals alike since the gold rush days! Following breakfast we will travel back to Anchorage along the scenic Parks Highway. Consider taking the aurora train north today from Talkeetna… call us for your customized aurora vacation package!

A note about the Aurora: The Aurora is a beautiful thing! She has many variables… ones we can control, ones we cannot control. The variables of aurora viewing we cannot control include the weather, & the solar activity/aurora activity. What we can do to try to control these “uncontrollables” is to provide guests a chance to see the aurora multiple nights. The Fairbanks Visitors Center published a finding that if you spend 3 or more nights in the Fairbanks area, it will increase your chance of seeing the aurora over 80%!!! So to control this uncontrollable, we provide guests a one night northern lights overnight program with the option to continue aurora viewing in Fairbanks. Friday is an adventure day dog sledding, aurora presentation to learn about the science behind the lights, and aurora viewing in the evening then Saturday you take the train to Fairbanks for three nights!
Factors we can control? The number of nights you stay, the amount of time you spend aurora viewing and when to aurora view. The Aurora Viewing Season is from August 21 to April 21. We book our aurora viewing tours within this season because it is dark enough here in Alaska to see lady aurora! The number of nights aurora viewing – we like to start with the Northern Lights Overnight then from there continue to Fairbanks (see: Northern Lights Getaway Package). Lastly, the amount of time you spend aurora viewing is easy because we have you go on tour. It is very difficult to fall asleep on a guided tour so you have LOTS of time to aurora view because you are staying up to looking for them. When you are here – use the Geophysical Institute’s Aurora Forecast to see what the solar activity/ aurora activity is predicted for each night you are here! http://www.gi.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast
How can we help you find the Aurora? Check out our two premier Alaska travel packages highlighting the aurora borealis here – Northern Lights Getaway from Anchorage or the Northern Lights Getaway from Fairbanks. And Call us! We want to know what is on your wish list & how many days you have so we can build you your aurora viewing vacation. Just signing up for one night aurora viewing is giving yourself one chance to see the lights. I love this tour and this is a GREAT way to learn about the aurora and enjoy winter in Alaska. But if you have your heart set on Aurora Borealis and this is your trip to Alaska to see it… don’t forget to call us! We can customize your Alaska vacation to make it special!

Salmon Berry Travel & Tours recommends travel insurance provided by TravelSafe Insurance. Our recommendation is based on positive guest feedback. In particular, the experience of one Salmon Berry guest is instructive:
- Our guest had booked the vacation of a lifetime and the ultimate Alaska package. She had to cancel the trip a week before it began due to unfortunate circumstances.
- She later told us that within ten minutes of phone time her claim was processed in full. She was very pleased with TravelSafe Insurance’s immediate and empathetic response. Getting a refund for her trip was the last thing she wanted to think about, and TravelSafe Insurance took care of her needs and concerns immediately.
