At Salmon Berry Travel & Tours, we haven’t met a season in Alaska that we don’t love. Whether panning for gold in the summer or joining the excitement of the Iditarod in winter, you can find a variety of stunning weather year-round. Here’s a season-by-season guide on what to expect and some helpful tips for being prepared for Alaska’s weather.
Spring and fall in Alaska
The weather in Alaska can be variable during spring and fall with warm days followed by evenings where the temperature can often still drop below freezing after the sun has gone down. There’s still plenty to enjoy these times of year — whether it be northern lights viewing, flightseeing, day cruises and more – it’s important to dress in removable layers so you can be comfortable as the weather changes. You’ll be all set if you’re prepared for everything from brilliant sunshine to chilly nights as both times of year can often see all four seasons combined into one single day.
Summering in Alaska
Summer in Alaska runs from late May or early June through the middle of August and is generally mild to hot, depending on where you are. The average temperature in Alaska during summer days (especially in the Interior region of the state, i.e., Fairbanks) is generally in the 70s but can easily see temperatures reach 80° – 90° F.
Cooler summer temps can be enjoyed in the southern and coastal regions, where the temps rarely exceed 65°F, with some areas receiving frequent rain showers that refresh the temperate coastal rainforests. If you plan on visiting higher elevations, pack accordingly. The temperatures are cooler the higher you go and depending on where you are, you could even encounter snow still on the ground during summer while visiting some of Alaska’s stunning mountain ranges.
July is generally the warmest month of the year throughout Alaska, followed closely by the more variable months of June and August.
Winter in Alaska
The months of winter in Alaska range from October or early November through March. In a state as large as Alaska, winter weather can vary dramatically depending on where you are in the state. Temperatures usually range from around 0°F to -30°F, with coastal temps rarely dropping below a relatively moderate 20° F.
Of course, winter in the Arctic and Interior regions is typically a completely different story from the coastal areas. Snow starts falling earlier and temperatures can drop lower than -30°F. Which can make for perfect winter adventures! Dog sledding, skiing, and snowmachining (snowmobiling to those from the Lower 48) are all popular winter activities in Alaska. Don’t forget about the northern lights!
